COLLEGE IN A DAY©

Rio Verde University

Rutherford School of Professional Education

In 2001 Rio Verde University began a new concept in professional and technical education.  Designated College in a Day©, centered around the concept of offering a student the opportunity to take targeted higher education courses utilizing a minimum amount of time: in this particular program - ONE DAY!!

The Board of Trustees under the direction of President Dr. David Rosen began working with local instructors in the El Paso, Texas – Juarez Mexico metroplex. They chose to start with a course in introductory salesmanship.  Commissioned by Western Academic Services, the course has successfully been reproduced in Utah, as well.  The instructor/author from El Paso, Joel Jakabowski created a simple formula to educate the new salesperson which allows them to take on a new career path with confidence, or improve on an old one.

In Utah the course is instructed by RVU-U President Dr. Ronald D. Lewis.  Other courses in nutrition, trace mineral supplementation, basic finance, blended family issues, starting a home based business, kabbalah, and home schooling have also been established.

Today over 25 College in a Day© courses are available.  These classes qualify for 1 semester hour of college credit.  Some qualify for CEU credit.  RVU has made arrangements currently (6-2008) with over 150 independent colleges, bible schools/seminaries, and technical schools to accept several of the courses for transfer credit.  The University is currently seeking to (1) expand that number of accepting schools; (2) to gain recognition for the courses by several accrediting and CEU associations; (3) to continue to expand and add new mini-training courses as student demand for these new educational products grow.

Discussions are already underway to create coursework in law office practice, paralegal topics, animal health – pet care, home gardening, and several theological classes.   The success of this program, which specializes in providing targeted course work geared for the working adult, is a further refinement of the schools and university programs across the USA that specialize in teaching professional training.  The RVU trustees feel there is huge potential growth in this type of education.  (Newsweek Vol.37. #18, 2005).

New areas of coursework in social work, alternative medicine, legal secretary programs, nurse’s aide, laboratory assistants, soil analysis, and bio- and neuro-feedback are currently being explored.  The Department has recently partnered with the Margaret Ayers Research Project in Neurofeedback at the RVU World Education Center to explore training and research projects.  And it is hoped by the fall of 2008 that several new pet health and veterinary science targeted topics will reach fruition.

Although this non-traditional focusing on a topic rather than a degree is somewhat removed from main-stream educational trends, the handwriting is on the wall.  Adult students are requesting often demanding, specialized training to supplement their formal 4 year educational backgrounds in order to further their learning and earning capacities.

In the coming months it is hoped that RVU will continue to lead the educational march towards targeted topic specific education.  If the future is any indication of what has been accomplished thus far, formal topic-based adult education may only be experiencing the tip of the iceberg in this ever changing educational marketplace.
