Turn your love of animals into a career. If you like animals and people, but haven't got the time or money or the educational background to become a veterinarian, there are still many ways you can get a job in the veterinary field.

Experience the sheer joy of a pet care career.

Veterinarians may have many different types of assisting staff working in their practices. They have a need for Veterinary Assistants, kennel personnel, Veterinary and Animal Care Specialists, Certified Veterinary Technicians, pet care workers, as well as administrative, secretarial, office, and even maintenance staff. In addition in veterinary (large and small animal) hospitals, there are laboratory technicians, medical specialists, and therapists and many different medical specialty practitioners. There are also jobs in pet stores, boarding kennels, animal shelters, rodeos, zoos, horse and dog racing tracks and places that do pet grooming and the latest craze, day care centers for ‘pooches’.

Many of these jobs don't require a lot of education, although as in almost any job or career, the more you have the better your chances of getting a good job, and one that will pay you even better.

If you were to ask my personal opinion, I think this would be a dream job for some people. If you are a cuddly animal lover, you probably would think you have died and gone to heaven as you get up each day to go work with the dogs, cats, birds, and other animals. Depending on where you work and where you live, you might also be around horses, cows, sheep, lambs, and other farm animals if your veterinary services office is involved in farm animal medicine, race/show horse healthcare/therapy, cattle breeding etc. In fact, one of the most unique and fun areas could include the care and maintenance of exotic animals, i.e. snakes, unusual birds, even in stranger cases, alligators and tigers.

Keep in mind at times it is going to be a dirty job: cages, floors, and stalls all have to be cleaned, over and over. Remember having pets is like having a little baby at home, they need continual maintenance so to speak. And caring for animals is not without it's heartaches. Please, please be forewarned: “it is not for the squeamish or anyone too soft hearted”. The disappointment and heartbreak of having to put down a dog or a cat is not pleasant work to have to be involved in. Nor is giving an animal an enema for instance, or assisting in births or operations. On the other hand, it is rewarding work for the right person and a great deal of satisfaction is experienced being part of a team when you save the life of someone's pet.

If animals, science, medicine, and dealing with people appeal to you, this will be a great career choice to consider. Work with animals! Your abilities can help keep animals healthy, nurse them when ill - even save their lives, and yes unfortunately clean up their messes! There are some critical skills you need to get into this moneymaking and high-demanding career as a veterinary assistant.

Now, you don’t have to risk your current job or juggle the schedule in the traditional type of career school. At the Rio Verde University College of Veterinary Sciences, there are several learning options. At our campus in Utah you can enjoy the structure and familiarity of formal classroom training, and hands-on laboratory and hospital instruction. See the academic scheduling site for class dates and times.

Using our distance learning programs anyone can enroll at any time. There are targeted classes centered around very specific training topics, and you train at home in your spare time, picking which programs best suit your personal goals while using proven learning methods (including our RVU College in a Day© systems).
